The multifunctional hall, which significantly extended the season of the Litomyšl hockey players, was nominated for the European Union’s Mies van der Rohe Award for Contemporary Architecture in 2007. The architects Aleš Burian and Gustav Křivinka spread a very airy roof structure over the 1930s ice rink. Light strips crossing the wide-open “beams” let streams of daylight penetrate into the interior. This fills the space with an unexpected amount of natural brightness. The walls of the building are surrounded by a translucent polycarbonate skin, pierced at the front of the building by a strip of glass allowing views of the historic city.
