The 64th season of the Smetana’s Litomyšl National Festival opens with a ceremonial concert, at which we are happy to welcome the Slovak Philharmonic again twenty-five years on. Following the tradition, we have included in the programme the works of our famous native Smetana, but also a beautiful song cycle by Mahler and, perhaps not only symbolically, the New World Symphony, which should become a herald of new better times.

“Mahler must have felt his encounter with the collection The Boy’s Magic Horn as an encounter with his own spiritual home. He found everything that moved his soul, and found it depicted the way he felt it: nature, piety, desire, love, parting, death, ghosts, joyful youth, childhood pranks, and humour…”
