Passionate rebellion, tragic love, and strong women fighting for freedom
Fibich’s Šárka is one of the pinnacles of Czech Romantic opera – a work in which a tragic love story
collides with ideals of liberty and pride. The plot loosely follows Smetana’s Libuše, performed at last
year’s festival, and tells the story of the legendary Maidens’ War that erupted after the death of the
mythical princess. Fibich’s drama of passion and betrayal unfolds in a richly orchestrated score that
surprises with its blend of lyrical tenderness and dramatic intensity.
This semi-staged production, prepared especially for Smetana Litomyšl under the baton of Robert Jindra,
promises a remarkable musical experience and a chance to discover a lesser-known gem of Czech
opera. Maida Hundeling performs the title role, together with Svatopluk Sem as Prince Přemysl and
Tadeusz Szlenkier as Ctirad.
