Verdi’s Aida, first performed in Cairo in 1871, is one of the best-known works of the operatic canon, combining grand choral numbers with finely drawn relationships between individual characters. Amid the war between Egypt and Ethiopia, we follow the Ethiopian princess Aida, enslaved and torn between her love for the military commander Radamès and loyalty to her homeland. This production by the State Opera of the National Theatre in Prague is based on the contrast between large-scale choral scenes and intimate dialogues, in which the voices of soloists Daniela Schillaci and Hovhannes Ayvazyan are heard in all their brilliance.
The performance will be presented in the original Italian with Czech and English subtitles.
