Bedřich Smetana memorial was commissioned from sculptor Jan Štursa (1880-1925) and architect Pavel Janák by the Celebration Committee for the Smetana Celebrations in Litomyšl, established to prepare the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
The bronze statue, which is still the heart of the square and the whole town, was unveiled on 22. June 1924 and the traditional meeting at the monument of the founder of Czech national music is organized on the day of 100. anniversary of its unveiling.
